BRISTOL, Conn., Aug. 19 (UPI) -- Bail was set at $3.5 million Tuesday for a Connecticut man charged with giving his year-old niece a deadly knife wound while he was babysitting her.

Arthur Hapgood, 36, of Waterbury was arrested Monday evening after police arrived at a home in Bristol and found Zaniyah Calloway with a slash wound in her stomach. The little girl was flown to Connecticut Children's Medical Center, where she died.

Hapgood told police he had been caring for the child all day Monday. He was treated a Bristol Hospital for injuries.

Police said that when they responded to a report of a disturbance, someone came out of a house on Park Street in Bristol holding Zaniyah and said her attacker was inside.

Hapgood, who formerly lived in Bristol, has a long arrest record that includes allegations of being involved in a gang shooting when he was 17. He is currently on probation after serving a prison sentence on drug charges.

Waterbury police said he was arrested twice in May on drug charges and once on a charge of interfering with a police officer. Last week, a woman filed a child-support claim against him in Family Court.
