NEW YORK, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- Gizmo the cat used at least one of his nine lives to survive the near 100-foot fall when he slipped from the railing on the terrace of his owner's 12th-story Manhattan penthouse and plunged nine stories to land on the roof of the third floor, just missing a skylight.

According to the New York Daily News, Gizmo landed on his feet, as the expression goes, sustaining only minor injuries including a broken tooth and some scratches.

"I can't believe he's alive!" said Samuel Jacobs, Gizmo's owner, who came home Tuesday to a cat-less penthouse.

"I became frantic. I looked everywhere for him. I tore the apartment apart looking for the cat," said Jacobs, who found Gizmo when he went out on his balcony and looked down, only to discover his beloved feline had plummeted to the roof of the third floor below.

"I started freaking out, I literally saw him and I was like, 'Oh no, no no. He's dead,'" he told 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck, who tweeted this photo of Jacobs and Gizmo.

Schuck also shared this image of Gizmo's drop:

Jacobs rushed to find help from the building's porter.

Together they banged on third-floor doors until they found a neighbor willing to let them pass through her space to access the landing, where Jacobs found Gizmo wedged between a wall and the skylight on the overhang.

"I just looked at him and he had this look of relief. He was crying and yelling. He was so freaked out."

Jacobs, worried about internal injuries, expedited his pet to a vet.

"Ten minutes later, they come out and say, believe it or not, your cat is fine. I still can't believe it. I just look at him and think, 'that's one lucky cat.'"
