Islamic State flag removed from New Jersey home, replaced with San Diego Chargers flag

The unexpected manifestation of terrorist iconography comes less than a week after a Twitter user claiming to be affiliated with the Islamic State tweeted a photograph or digital forgery of the group's flag in front of the White House.

GARWOOD, N.J., Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A New Jersey resident has removed the flag of the Islamic State from his or her home after setting off a firestorm on social media.

The photo was first tweeted Tuesday, clearly showing the Turkish and Islamic State flags flying outside of the Garwood home.

Garwood Police Cheif Bruce D. Underhill told the Washington Free Beacon that authorities knew about reports of the flag and that it was removed voluntarily.

"Please be assured that the Garwood Police are aware of the situation and have taken the appropriate steps. At this time, the flag in question has been voluntarily taken down. No further comments," he said in a statement.

Investigative Twitter users stopping by the house confirmed the flag was removed and replaced with a baby blue and white American flag that appears to express support for a much more harmless organization, the San Diego Chargers.

The unexpected manifestation of terrorist iconography on U.S. shores comes within a week of a Twitter user claiming to be affiliated with the Islamic State tweeting out a photograph or digital forgery of the group's flag in front of the White House and a Colorado woman's expected guilty plea for attempting to join the religious extremists.
