WASHINGTON, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The Secret Service put the White House on lockdown Thursday night, after a toddler accidentally penetrated the security perimeter around the North Lawn.

The young boy was somehow able to squeeze through the north fence, triggering security alarms and, per protocol, putting the White House in a state of temporary lockdown.

Secret service agents quickly responded and were able to return the toddler to his parents.

"We were going to wait until he learned to talk to question him," Secret Service spokesperson Edwin Donovan said in a lighthearted official statement.

"In lieu of that he got a timeout and was sent on way with parents."

In spite of the good-natured response from the White House officials, the toddler's unintended security breech occurred minutes before President Obama was scheduled to announce the U.S. would be launching targeted airstrikes against the Islamic State in Iraq.

The statement was delayed due to the toddler.
