Traffic moves on Sunset Boulevard for first time since water main break

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- Cars began moving Monday on Sunset Boulevard, the best-known street in Los Angeles, for the first time since last week's huge water main break.

Mayor Eric Garcetti said the thoroughfare reopened at 1:30 a.m. Two 90-year-old mains, both major links in the city's water system, ruptured last week at the point where they connect, sending millions of gallons of water spewing into the streets and the UCLA campus.

The repair job required workers to dig a large hole to get at the site of the leak. The city Department of Public Works said that once the repair job was accomplished, workers had to move tons of sand and aggregate back to fill the 2,300-square-foot hole.

In his announcement, Garcetti said speed limits on Sunset in the area of the break have been reduced this week. The boulevard will be closed overnight on Friday, Saturday and possibly Sunday for final repairs.
