DENVER, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Immigrants living in the United States illegally have to go through an interview before they can get a Colorado driver's license, officials said.

About 10,000 people are seeking licenses or identification cards under the law that took effect Friday. Only five Division of Motor Vehicle offices in the state will be processing them.

In addition to the interview, the immigrants must provide more documentation than citizens and legal residents.

State Sen. Jesse Ulibarri, a Democrat who supports the law, said allowing illegal residents to drive legally will make Colorado's highways safer. He said it will also protect people who have sometimes been victims of other drivers when they were involved in crashes.

"Folks will say 'Oh, you don't have a license, you don't have insurance, and I understand you're vulnerable ... I'm going to extort you for the $1,000 that it's going to take to fix my car that I was responsible for.' And that is not okay either," Ulibarri said.
