SAN DIEGO, July 31 (UPI) -- A small plane crashed in the parking lot of a San Diego shopping center Wednesday afternoon, killing one person and seriously injuring a second.

According to witnesses and local police, at roughly 5:30 p.m. local time Wednesday, the single engine Mooney M20L clipped the roof of a Target store before ultimately wrecking in a nearby Costco parking lot.

Emergency responders put out a fire caused by the crash and, with the assistance of witnesses, rescued two women -- the pilot, believed to be in her 50s, and her 78-year-old passenger.

Both women and one of the good samaritan witnesses were transported to a nearby hospital, where the elderly passenger died. The other witness-turned-rescuer was treated for injuries on the scene.

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident with a full report expected by mid August.
