CHICAGO, July 31 (UPI) -- Police in Chicago say a tech employee upset about a recent demotion shot his boss, leaving him in critical condition Thursday morning, before turning the gun on himself and committing suicide.
Police responded to an emergency call just before 10:00 a.m. in downtown Chicago's Bank of America building, in the city's financial district. On the seventeenth floor, police found two men on the ground, one dead the other critically injured.
Authorities say the dead man, a 59-year-old employee at the technology firm where the shooting took place, was recently demoted during company-wide downsizing and demanded a meeting with his boss. The meeting was granted and the employee allegedly shot his company's 54-year-old CEO in the stomach and head before fatally shooting himself.
The shooter was declared dead on the scene; the CEO was transported to Northwestern University hospital, where he is in critical condition.
Chicago's city-wide handgun ban was struck down by the Supreme Court in 2010 and its ban on handgun sales was overturned earlier in 2014.
