CONWAY, N.H., July 21 (UPI) -- A 15-year-old last seen in October 2013 safely returned to her family's home Sunday night, although the circumstances surrounding her mysterious disappearance remain under investigation.

On October 9, 2013, just a few days prior to her 15th birthday, Abigail Hernandez disappeared after she left her Conway, N.H., high school to return home for the evening.

Nearly a month later, Hernandez sent a letter to her mother, but law enforcement officials did not release any details in fear that copycats would try to sabotage the ongoing investigation into her disappearance.

"The facts and circumstances surrounding Abigail's disappearance continue to be actively investigated,'' New Hampshire Attorney General Joseph Foster said in a statement. Foster described the operation as a joint effort between the FBI and local authorities in New Hampshire, but declined to elaborate further.

As for the Hernandez family, they're just glad to have their daughter back.

"Today we are the happiest people on earth," Hernandez's mother told officials when the two were reunited.
