Texas mortuary moves, leaves behind eight dead bodies

The Johnson Family Mortuary claims it was just a “misunderstanding.”

FORT WORTH, Texas, July 16 (UPI) -- A Texas business that was asked to vacate a building in Fort Worth left something fairly important behind -- eight dead, decomposing bodies.

The Johnson Family Mortuary was informed by its landlord a few weeks ago it needed to leave the property. The unattended bodies were found on Tuesday while the property owner was investigating the building.

"A total of eight bodies -- human remains, aged from infant to adult, were found in the building in varying stages of decomposition, some quite advanced," Fort Worth police spokesman Sgt. Raymond Bush said in a news release.

Mortuary co-owner Dondre Johnson, who runs the business with his wife, Rachel, and his twin brother, Derrick Johnson, says the whole thing a "misunderstanding," although the exact nature of the mix-up remains unclear.

"This is a funeral home and when you go into a funeral home you can expect to find bodies," Johnson told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The mortuary's state license expires this month and the business is being investigated.

"We will continue to serve our families," Johnson said. "Here, or maybe somewhere else."

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office has taken custody of the bodies and no charges have been filed at this time.

"In a few days from now, we'll be on a reality show," Johnson told the Dallas Morning News. "So I want all this media."
