SAVANNAH, Ga., July 16 (UPI) -- More than 100 gamblers and crew spent a night at sea after a casino boat ran aground off the South Carolina coast.

The Coast Guard began evacuating the Escapade on Wednesday afternoon. Officials said the boat ran aground at about 1 a.m. in Calibogue Sound.

Attempts to tow the boat back to port failed.

There were 94 passengers and 27 crew members on the boat at the time of the grounding. The Coast Guard said most were being transferred to one of its vessels and being shuttled to Fort Pulaski while four who could not negotiate the transfer were evacuated by helicopter.

They were to be returned to the vessel's dock by charter bus.
