JACKSONVILLE, Fla., July 14 (UPI) -- A man in Florida is charged with child neglect after leaving his 7-year-old son inside a car while he went to work at a furniture store.

Police arrested Hamid Ahmad Nike Mohammad Ahmadzada, 49, Sunday at noon while he was cleaning a furniture store in Jacksonville. A customer discovered Ahmadzada's son lying in the passenger seat of a locked car in the shade and called 911.

Although every window in the car was partially rolled down and police say the boy was neither harmed nor in distress, Ahmadzada remains in custody charged with a type of neglect that does not inflict bodily harm.

An Afghan immigrant, Ahmadzada speaks little English. When a translator informed him of his constitutional right to legal representation, Ahmadzada demanded an attorney.

Ahmadzada says he simply forgot to drop his son at day care, but authorities believe he planned to leave the child in the car while he worked.
