One dead, one hurt when small plane crashes into Indiana backyard

GREENWOOD, Ind., July 11 (UPI) -- A small plane crashed into a backyard in Greenwood, Ind., killing one man on board and injuring a second Friday afternoon.

Two people who helped pull the injured man from the plane also had minor injuries, police said. One had an electrical shock and the other a hurt knee.

The single-engine plane struck two houses and a fence before the crash. Beer drinkers on the patio at the nearby Oaken Barrel Brewing Co. saw the plane come down.

"The plane was a little bit wobbly. It was pretty low," said Monica LeMasters, who was on her way to work at the Oaken Barrel. "My eyes are following it and it just goes down."

The plane was in flames after it hit the ground.

Chelsey Fussner, an emergency nurse who was at the Oaken Barrel with her fiancee, said she ran to the plane immediately. She said one man was there trying to pull one of the pilots out of the plane and a second had a garden hose turned on the fire.

The plane, a 1991 fixed wing, single-engine Mooney M20M, is registered to a Greenwood resident, William M. Gilliland. A police department spokesman said it had just taken off from a local airport for a routine inspection in another state.
