GARY, Ind., July 11 (UPI) -- An 88-year-old man in Indiana was found stabbed to death Friday morning when police searched his house after the midnight stabbing of his wife eight miles away.

Shortly after midnight Friday, 80-year-old Margarine Haywood was stabbed to death at Methodist hospital in Merrillville after coworkers heard her arguing with someone. Three hours later when police searched Haywood's home in Gary they found her 88-year-old husband James stabbed to death as well.

"Police officers went to that location, forced entry into that house, and discovered a male, deceased, at that location," Gary Police Department Chief Wade Ingram told reporters.

Both victims were stabbed multiple times and police have ruled the killings homicides.

"This is completely out of the ordinary and we do want to stress that although it seems as if this is some random act of violence, it is not," Merrillville Police chief of detectives Robert Wiley said.

A male suspect in 40s was taken into custody around 5 a.m. in Gary. Police say the suspect was related to the Haywoods. He is being held in Lake County Jail, but charges have yet to be filed.
