Local sheriff: "We're not going to stop until we find out who did this."

LOBELVILLE, Tenn., July 10 (UPI) -- Authorities confirmed a long-serving member of the Tennessee National Guard was shot to death Wednesday at an armory in Perry County.

According to Maj. Gen. Max Haston, the victim of Wednesday's shooting was a sergeant first class who served in the Tennessee Guard for over 20 years. He was in charge of day-to-day operations for his unit.

Yesterday afternoon a gunman fired several times striking the victim at least once in the chest before fleeing. The victim was sent to a local hospital, but died before a LifeFlight helicopter could arrive from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, about 75 miles northeast of the armory.

Josh DeVine of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation told local reporters an individual has been detained for questioning after a brief manhunt. DeVine declined to call this person a suspect and emphasized that he is not under arrest. DeVine also said authorities are not currently looking for anyone else.

"We developed leads and information and were able to take him into custody at a nearby home without incident," Devine told the Tennessean.

Some local media outlets are reporting the detained individual is a teenager who is considered a suspect, but authorities have not confirmed this.

For now, details such as why the shooting occurred or if the victim and assailant knew each other are still unclear, but local police vow to find answers.

Local Sheriff Tommy Hickerson knew the unidentified victim and promised to bring his killer to justice. "He was a good friend of mine and we're not going to stop until we find out who did this."
