Thirty-seven year old Jose Jorge Barroso-Alfaro and his 35-year-old brother Martin Barroso-Alfaro dove into the river after the Jose's son fell in while fishing off of Highway 51. Witnesses say both men never resurfaced after diving in and were swept away by the current.
Michael Feldmeier, a 23-year-old bystander, saw the attempted rescue and came to the Jose's son's aide, successfully getting the boy to safety.
Police were called at 2:35 p.m. local time and marine units and dive teams were deployed to rescue Jose and Martin. Unfortunately, law enforcement was unable to resuscitate the men after recovering their bodies. Authorities say both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
