The shark bit one of the swimmers in the torso as he swam by.

"There was the long-distance swimmers coming from Hermosa [Beach]. At the wrong place, at the wrong time, they swam right into him, unknowingly," the fisherman, whose name wasn't reported, said.

The swimmer was taken to the trauma center at UCLA Medical Center where he was listed in stable condition. The injured swimmer was conscious and able to breath on his own the the entire time of his rescue.

Sheriff's officials and a lifeguard boat coaxed the shark back into deeper waters. The shark was estimated to be between 7 and 10 feet long.
