Joey Chestnut gets engaged, wins Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest

Chestnut's 61 dogs and buns were enough to beat out second place eater Matt Stonie's 58 hot dogs.

CONEY ISLAND, N.C., July 4 (UPI) -- Mark it eight. That's how may times Joey "Jaws" Chestnut has now won the Nathan's Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island.

Along the way to his eighth Coney Island crown, Chestnut also laughed in the face of the age old wisdom: never get engaged before slamming 61 hot dogs down your throat in a matter of minutes. But Chestnut did just that, proposing to his girlfriend of three years, Neslie Ricasa, on the event's main stage. The crowd received her "yes" with raucous cheers.

The 61 dogs and buns weren't enough to challenge Chestnut's own record of 69 dogs in 10 minutes, a pace he set last year to earn his seventh title. But it was enough to beat out second place eater Matt Stonie's 58 hot dogs.

Earlier this week Chestnut said his girlfriend pushes him to perform better. "I do a lot better than I should," he told the Huffington Post. "She likes a winner."

Chestnut has won the contest every year since 2007, when he beat out Takeru Kobayashi and proclaimed: "I'm the best eater in the world."
