POTRERO, Calif., June 30 (UPI) -- A California woman is awaiting confirmation from the Guinness Book of World Records to determine if her five-inch-tall cat holds the record for world's shortest feline.

If the adult cat, Pixel, holds the record, she'll be taking it from her mother, Fizz Girl, who was confirmed to be only six inches tall in 2012.

The tiny felines are members of the Mini Mew Munchkin breed, or munchkin cats for short, named for their abnormally diminutive stature.

"People who don't understand the gene consider it a genetic defect or mutation or something of an abomination," explained breeder Tiffani Kjeldergaard. "It's very unfair for them to say that. It's natural for these cats to be this tall, just like it's natural for some people to have brown eyes -- it wouldn't be wrong for them to have blue eyes."

Kjeldergaard owns Pixel and Fizz Girl, along with a whole pack of the miniature felines.

"Even people that aren't cat people go crazy for them. They say about how cute they are and how they want to take them straight home with them."
