SOMERSET, Ky., June 27 (UPI) -- A lawyer known for defending accused killers in high-profile cases was gunned down Friday morning as he walked to work in a small Kentucky city.

Mark Stanziano was shot at about 8 a.m. in front of his office in Somerset, a city of fewer than 12,000 people and the seat of Pulaski County in the southern part of the state. A man who lives nearby, Clinton Inabritt, was quickly charged with his murder.

Police said Inabritt had approached Stanziano recently seeking help with his problems. Investigators were unsure if he had ever been one of Stanziano's clients.

Stanziano defended Danny Shelley, who was convicted of shooting Pulaski County Sheriff Sam Catron at a campaign fish fry in 2002. He was the lawyer for Kenneth Keith, a minister and pawn-shop owner who allegedly killed three people in a Danville, Ky., pawn shop last year, including the owners who were shot in front of their children.
