Police chase ends when gang-shooting suspects crash near Los Angeles airport

The Los Angeles area where the shooting occurred is a violent one, as 11 homicides have been reported within a mile of 53rd and Figueroa in the past year.

LOS ANGELES, June 20 (UPI) -- Three men suspected of a gang-related homicide in Los Angeles were arrested Friday after they crashed into a pole while trying to get away, police said.

The pursuit began around 2 a.m. Officers responding to a report of gunfire at 53rd and Figueroa streets in South Los Angeles found a wounded man in his 20s lying in the street and three men getting into a minivan.

Police chased the van down the 110 Freeway. It crashed near Los Angeles International Airport, and two men tried to escape on foot.

The pair and a third man in the minivan were arrested and taken to a hospital for examination, KTLA-TV reported. The gunshot victim died after being transferred to a hospital.

The Los Angeles Times Homicide Report said the area where the shooting occurred is a violent one. Eleven homicides have been reported within a mile of 53rd and Figueroa in the past year.
