BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., June 17 (UPI) -- Gov. Rick Perry, a lifelong Texan with ancestors who moved to the state when it was still part of Mexico, has reportedly said he is thinking about moving to California.

Mark Leibovich, who penned a piece on the governor for {link:New York Times Magazine Tuesday, said Perry's decision could depend on whether he decides on another run for the Republican presidential nomination.

"Perry told me that he loves California, vacations in San Diego annually, visits the state about six times a year and might even move here in January when he's done with his 14-year stint running Texas," said Leibovich.

That was followed by the caveat: "That is, if he does not somehow decide to run for president. Perry's standard answer about 2016 is a simple 'I dunno.'"

Perry apparently did not elaborate on what draws him to California. Leibovich said he responded to a direct question with a story about former Navy SEAL Marcus Luttrell, the co-author of Lone Survivor, and his battle to get treatment from the VA. The governor and Leibovich ate at a Jewish deli in Beverly Hills while Perry was in Los Angeles to speak to Jewish Republicans, promoting the merits of doing business in Texas vs. California.

Perry was born on a ranch 60 miles north of Abilene and graduated from Texas A&M in 1972. Twelve years later, he entered the state legislature as a Democrat, and, like many in his generation, later switched parties.
