BALTIMORE, June 13 (UPI) -- A bull was shot and killed in Baltimore by police Friday morning after roaming loose through a residential neighborhood.

According to local police, residents first spotted the bull trotting along the median of a busy street shortly after 10 a.m. Authorities chased the bull, unsuccessfully attempting to safely contain it as it continued roaming through populated areas. Eventually police had to kill the animal in a hail of gunfire.

"We have to take into account the safety of the surroundings of everybody," Baltimore police spokeswoman Sgt. Sarah Connolly explained.

The bull is believed to have escaped from a West Baltimore slaughterhouse where, according to one employee, it jumped over two fences and a police car to break loose.

In 2002, a bull escaped from a Baltimore slaughterhouse, eventually getting taken down by a SWAT team.
