TROUTDALE, Ore., June 10 (UPI) -- Local police have confirmed that Tuesday's early-morning shooting at Reynolds High School in Troutdale left one student and the shooter dead.

"Unfortunately, we had a very tragic incident this morning at Reynolds High School: One student is deceased as a result of a lone gunman who entered the school," said Troutdale Police Chief Scott Anderson in a press conference. "The lone gunman is also deceased at the scene."

The victim has been identified as student Emilio Hoffman according to reports from his family. Police have not yet released the name of the shooter. Track coach Todd Rispler was also injured when a bullet grazed his hip but he was not seriously hurt.

Shortly after 8 a.m. local time, witnesses say the shooting began in the school gymnasium, prompting teachers to run through the halls telling students to get into classrooms.

"[My son] was in there for PE and thought it was fireworks until they didn't stop and people started running," Greg Fernandes, the father of a Reynolds student, told the Oregonian. "That's when he ran to the main building."

Shortly thereafter, the school was put on lockdown.

"They told us to turn the lights off," an unidentified student recalled to local reporters. "It was pretty scary, it was really scary. All we heard were silent hallways. Then we heard police muffled through the walls 45 minutes to an hour."

An hour later police confirmed the gunman had been killed and the situation was neutralized.

Early reports suggested that there were three gunmen, but police now believe the shooter acted alone. Another individual was taken into custody when police discovered a gun during a possession search, but that person is not believed to be involved with the shooting or gunman.

Students describe security at the school as loose, with Adrian Tapia telling the Oregonian "Anyone can walk in through any door."
