CINCINNATI, June 6 (UPI) -- A Cincinnati woman used a baseball bat to beat off the pit bulls that mauled her 6-year-old daughter, leaving the girl with gruesome injuries.

Zainabou Drame was in an induced coma at Cincinnati Children's Hospital after Wednesday's attack.

"They had to basically put her face back on," her grandfather, Leslie McElrath Jr., told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Family members said Zainabou was attacked after she wandered away from a group of children. Police officers called to the scene shot and killed the dogs.

Tanina Drame, Zainabou's mother, came out of the house with a bat and hit the pit bulls to try to get them away from her daughter.

Gina Tyus, the girl's aunt, said the dogs attacked her face from both sides, almost taking her jaw off. She said surgeons had to remove Zainabou's tongue.

"She is lying there -- her face is swollen almost beyond recognition -- I thank God she is still here. We are praying. Just trying to keep hope alive and asking everyone to pray with us," Tyus said after spending the night at the hospital with her niece.
