CUMMING, Ga., June 6 (UPI) -- An individual is dead after shooting a sheriff in Georgia Friday morning outside a courthouse in Forsyth county.
Shortly after 11 a.m., a courthouse in Cumming, Ga., about 40 miles north of Atlanta, was evacuated following gunshots that sent one local sheriff to the hospital. The 25-year-old police officer is reportedly in stable condition.
The deputy engaged the alleged shooter after spotting him carrying smoke grenades and an assault rifle while wearing a gas mask and bulletproof vest.
Although it is unclear when the shooter was killed, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that his corpse is face down in handcuffs next to a crashed SUV with its doors ajar, a claim echoed by witnesses.
The courthouse and surrounding businesses have been evacuated while bomb-sniffing dogs search for additional explosives. A motive has not yet been determined.
