WASHINGTON, June 5 (UPI) -- Hours after suffering a decisive loss in the South Dakota Senate primary Tuesday, Republican candidate Annette Bosworth was arrested on charges of violating campaign law.

Bosworth will face 12 felony counts of lying on petitions to get on the ballot, accusations she said were "political prosecution" by state Attorney General Marty Jackley.

"There was no criminal intent to deceive, nor was there any reason to," Bosworth said.

Another candidate, independent Clayton Walker, was removed from the ballot last month and charged Wednesday on nine felony counts.

Jackley accused Bowsorth and Walker of "serious, deliberate" violations that "must be addressed in order to preserve the integrity of our elections."

Bosworth is accused of perjury and filing false documents for falsely signing oaths that South Dakotans had signed petitions in her presence when she was in fact traveling in the Philippines. Walker submitted 3,374 signature petitions but a review from the Secretary of State found most of the signatures were invalid. Walker has been charged with forgery and perjury.

"We're not alleging that somebody... came in and signed a petition and put the wrong address on there," Jackley said. "These allegations are much more straightforward and deliberate."

Bosworth surrendered voluntarily Wednesday morning to Minnehaha County Jail and was released on her own recognizance. She is scheduled to appear in court on June 23.
