NEW YORK, June 5 (UPI) -- A man who was released from prison in May has been charged with stabbing two young children in an elevator in a New York housing project, killing one.
Daniel St. Hubert was arrested Wednesday evening. Police said he had a knife when he was collared.
Prince Joshua Avitto, 6, known as P.J., died and his friend, Mikayla Capers, 7, was critically injured in the attack Sunday at the Boulevard Houses in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn. Police suspect St. Hubert of killing Tanaya Grant Copeland, an 18-year-old college student who was stabbed near the Boulevard Houses on Friday night.
New York Police Department sources told the New York Daily News that investigators tracked St. Hubert to the Ozone Park neighborhood of Queens through his cellphone.
Shortly before the arrest, police held a news conference to announce the search for St. Hubert.
"He's a violent individual ... he's assaulted a correction officer, he's assaulted a police officer," detectives said.
St. Hubert, 27, who has a lengthy arrest record, was released May 23 after serving a sentence for attempted murder and assault.
Aricka McLinton, P.J.'s mother, went to the 75th Precinct to thank officers who helped in the investigation and arrest.
"Thank you, NYPD, thank you! God is good!" she told neighborhood residents gathered outside the police station.
