WASHINGTON, June 5 (UPI) -- The first Friday of June is Global Doughnut Day, and that means bakers around the country are giving the pastry away for free in celebration.
According to the Salvation Army, it started the first National Doughnut Day in 1938 to honor the 250 "doughnut girls" of World War I, who were sent to Europe to comfort American forces.
"They had lard and flour and sugar, and they figured out a way to make doughnuts," a Salvation Army spokesman told USA Today. "It brought a sense of calm and a bit of home into the chaos of war."
Nationally, Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Cumberland Farms and the Melting Pot are all giving out free doughnuts. Canadians and northern Midwesterners can also visit Tim Horton's, while the coastal elite along the 95-corridor can stop by Mitt Romney-favorite WaWa. Many local chains and non-bakeries are participating as well.
