Daniel J. Calhoon, 19, of Snohomish, Wash., held his breath driving through a US 26 tunnel near Manning, Ore., causing him to pass out and crash his Toyota Camry into an oncoming SUV.
Both the SUV and the Camry smashed into the tunnel wall and a third vehicle hit the Camry.
Four people, including Calhoon and his passenger, Bradley Meyring, and two people in the SUV, were injured and taken to a local hospital.
Meyring was in serious condition on Monday.
Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings said Calhoon, who was cited for reckless driving, reckless endangerment and fourth-degree assault, "lost" the hold-your-breath game.
"In this case, I think he lost and unfortunately other people were impacted," Hastings said. "It's obviously never recommended that drivers do anything that's distracting."
