WASHINGTON, May 23 (UPI) -- Meghan McCain said that even though the media "annihilated" Sarah Palin, the former Alaska governor wasn't the reason John McCain lost his 2008 presidential bid.

Speaking to Larry King on Ora.TV's Politicking Wednesday, McCain defended her father's choice of running mate, saying Palin was attacked because she was a strong woman.

"No, I don't believe" he made a mistake, McCain said. "My father could have had Jesus Christ as his running mate and it wouldn't have mattered in '07,."

McCain also said he hates GOP political operative Karl Rove, who in 2000, was accused of circulating a rumor that the senator had an illegitimate black child, and said she found his recent comments about Hillary Clinton "disgusting."

"I think what we saw with Karl Rove talking about her health, though, is sort of just the beginning," McCain said. "Just the tip of the iceberg of what's going to happen with the attacks on her."

But the senator said he's put his own enmity behind him.

"I don't hate Karl Rove," he said later Thursday on Fox News' Your World with Neil Cavuto. "The campaign is over."

"As far as my daughter's emotions are concerned, it's the family members that always take these things the hardest," he said. "I've moved past it."
