WHITE LAKE, N.C., May 21 (UPI) -- U.S. Marine Corps officials said the remains of Lance Corporal Steven M. Hancock were found in North Carolina on Tuesday after he fell from an Osprey aircraft during a training exercise.

Hancock disappeared during a routine training missing Monday evening after falling from a MV-22B Osprey.

His remains were spotted by an aircraft Tuesday afternoon about 45 miles west of Marine Corps Air Station New River, near White Lake, N.C.

"I want to pass along our sincere thanks to all who assisted us in recovering Lance Cpl. Hancock," said Major General Robert Hedelund, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing commanding general. "From the hard work of two air stations, to local community efforts, to the II Marine Expeditionary Force, 2nd Marine Division and the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing team, we could not have had a better response or support. This is a very tragic loss to 2nd MAW, Marine Aircraft Group 26 and VMMT-204, but your professional, compassionate and genuine care is welcomed and greatly appreciated."

Hancock was attached to the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and was part of the crew on the aircraft.

The Osprey, a tilt-rotor aircraft, is designed to take off and land like a helicopter while flying like a plane.

Military officials said the circumstances of the fall are under investigation.
