PHOENIX, May 14 (UPI) -- Jodi Arias is due back in court this week for a hearing with a second panel of jurors who will decide if Arias will be subjected to the death penalty.

Arias, 33, was convicted of first-degree murder in May 2013, but the jury could not decide on a sentence. Prosecutors have the option of bringing together a second panel of new jurors to see if they can secure the death penalty. If they also fail to reach a decision, then either the judge will sentence Arias to life in prison or Arias will be eligible for release after 25 years.

Arias admitted she killed Alexander, but claimed it was self-defense. Alexander received 30 stab wounds, had his throat slit and was shot in the head, leading prosecutors to argue that Arias murdered him in a jealous rage when Alexander broke off their relationship.

Arias will be back in court Friday.
