The so-called Bernardo fire broke out Tuesday off Camino San Bernardo, according to fire officials, with parts of southern California experiencing wind and temperature conditions conducive to wildfires.
Temperatures in San Diego reached the mid-90s by 1 p.m., with warm weather expected to continue into Wednesday and Thursday.
Most of the affected homes are located within San Diego's city limits.
The Bernardo fire burned through more than 800 actress and was only five percent contained on Tuesday evening.
"It's windy, it's hot and the fire is still moving," San Diego Fire rep Lee Swanson said.
