BRENTWOOD, N.H., May 12 (UPI) -- A New Hampshire home exploded Monday after a fire and a shooting that injured an officer, police said.

A police officer was shot around 4:45 p.m. while responding to a call at a Brentwood, N.H., residence in what appeared to be an armed standoff, Seacoast Online reported.

The officer, whose name and agency weren't reported, was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

The residence -- a duplex in a senior living community -- broke out in flames after the shooting as SWAT teams and other law enforcement officials converged on the building. At about 5:50 p.m., a large explosion rocked the second level of the house, blowing out the roof and causing a massive fireball.

Neighbors said the home belonged to Walter Nolan, who is in his 80s. He lives in the home with his son, Mike Nolan.

Some 75 firefighters responded to the fire and were able to put out the flames. No firefighters were injured.
