FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., May 7 (UPI) -- A Florida man said he wants an apology from his son's school after the boy's teacher told him he couldn't read his Bible in class.

Twelve-year-old Giovanni Rubeo's teacher, Swornia Thomas, called the boy's parents to inform them their son couldn't read the book in her class.

“I noticed that he has a book -- a religious book -- in the classroom. He’s not permitted to read those books in my classroom," she said in a voicemail message.

Giovanni's father, Paul Rubeo, told Fox and Friends he wants an apology from Park Lakes Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for refusing to allow his child to read the book.

The Liberty Institute is representing the Rubeo family in their fight to allow Giovanni to read the Bible and to get a written apology.

A statement from Broward County Public Schools says it permits students to read religious material during free reading period. Paul Rubeo said the district argued the boy was trying to read the Bible outside of free reading period.
