SAN ANTONIO, May 5 (UPI) -- An off-duty police officer was gunned down outside his tattoo parlor in San Antonio, Texas, investigators said Monday.

Julian Pesina, 29, was pronounced dead at a hospital after he was shot at about 10 p.m. Sunday. Balcones Heights Police Chief Henry Dominguez said investigators believe Pesina was ambushed by two men with a handgun and shotgun.

Pesina had been an officer for seven years in Balcones Heights, an enclave totally surrounded by San Antonio. The tattoo parlor, just over the city line in San Antonio, was a side business.

“That was one of his favorite pastimes, I guess, and he was an artist,” Dominguez told the San Antonio Express-News.

Dominguez said Pesina had been on duty Sunday and ended his shift at 6 p.m. Officers from both San Antonio and Balcones Heights responded.

“We got a call for shots fired in the area and we arrived there and found him on the ground,” Dominguez said. “The officers who showed up were the officers that relieved him.”
