NEWARK, N.J., May 4 (UPI) -- The James family was reunited with their dog Reckless 18 months after he went missing during Superstorm Sandy.

In an appearance on Fox and Friends, Chuck and Elicia James said they found the brown and white terrier-pit bull mix recently when they went to a shelter near their New Jersey home. They wanted to adopt a new dog for the daughter Alexandra's 10th birthday.

“I missed him,” Alexandra said, adding that she's happy Reckless is home.

“He re-adjusted really well,” Chuck James said. “He ran to the first bed and couch and hasn't moved.”

The family said Reckless ran away from their damaged home during the storm and his collar was torn on a piece of broken fence through which he escaped.

“We go up to the normal streets where we usually walked him and things like that, then you start to get desperate, start going places you haven't been,” Chuck James said. “The next thing you know, it's an hour and a half, two hours later, and you still don't have him. You leave the gate open and hope he finds his way home.”
