YOSEMITE VILLAGE, Calif., April 21 (UPI) -- A 26-year-old rock climber from Palo Alto, Calif., fell 30 feet from a granite rock face in Yosemite National Park on Sunday.

Officials said that the unidentified climber, who had been climbing the park's Cathedral range with three others, slipped and fell to a rock bench about 1,000 feet from the ground.

The man was in too much pain to move and was airlifted from the park by helicopter. He sustained serious injuries but remains in stable condition at a Modesto hospital.

“He was wide awake, he gave me a thumbs up and he was OK,” said Officer Andrea Brown, of the California Highway Patrol’s Air Operations Division, who helped rescue the climber.

Yosemite officials said the incident marked the second time in one week that someone in the park had to be rescued by helicopter.
