KANSAS CITY, Mo., April 18 (UPI) -- A man arrested in a Kansas City, Mo., suburb has been charged with some of a string of highway shootings that have terrorized drivers, police said Friday.
Mohammed Whitaker, 27, was arrested Thursday at a house in Grandview, Mo., just outside Kansas City. He has been charged so far with 18 counts involving nine shootings.
Investigators are unsure exactly how many shootings were involved, although they say at least a dozen appeared to be the work of the same person. No one has been killed or seriously injured, but at least three people were shot in the arm or leg.
In some cases, drivers mistook the impact from a shooting for a rock and were unaware anyone had fired on them until they found bullet holes in their cars.
“To my knowledge, he’s never fired a gun” Whitaker's father told the Kansas City Star. “I’m totally shocked by all this.”
The father said Whitaker had been working for a medical supply company in Overland Park, Kan., and trying to pay off bills after dropping out of a technical school.
