WASHINGTON, April 17 (UPI) -- More than 51 percent of Americans want the legalization of marijuana, but do not want the legalization of harder drugs.
The HuffPost/YouGov surveys show only 11 percent of Americans support the legalization of cocaine. 9 percent of those surveyed support street drugs like MDMA, crack, and heroin to be legalized; and only 8 percent support the legalization of harder drugs, such as LSD and methamphetamine.
While the results of the survey are not surprising, they could potentially debunk the argument that marijuana legalization would lead to support for the legalization of all drugs. Americans seem to make a clear distinction between marijuana, a plant that does not cause any known significant harm, and other drugs, chemical compounds that are often dangerous.
Recreational marijuana is legal in Washington state and Colorado, with other states and Washington D.C. adopting decriminalization measures that are considered steps toward legalization.
