Woman killed by police in San Francisco area allegedly attacked officers with bat

Police in Santa Clara, Calif., say they shot bat-wielding woman because they feared for their safety.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 14 (UPI) -- A San Francisco-area woman who called police to say she might hurt herself or other people was killed when she allegedly came at the officers with a baseball bat.

Santa Clara police said the officers were responding to a 911 call Sunday afternoon. They were at the front door of her apartment when she allegedly rushed them, wielding an aluminum bat.

"Fearing for their safety, two officers discharged their firearm, striking the subject," police said in a news release.

The woman was fatally injured and died at a hospital later Sunday.
