Kelly Gordon, 22, of Brielle, N.J., died late Thursday night on York Avenue on Manhattan's Upper East Side. She was with her sister and a male friend, witnesses said.
"We ran over right after the accident," man who works in the neighborhood told the New York Daily News. "She looked horrible, there was blood coming from her nose, you could tell she wasn't going to make it."
The man, who did not want his identity to be released, said he found a flashlight and began directing traffic. He said he saw a shoe on one side of the street and Gordon's purse on the other.
Witnesses said Gordon and her companions were jaywalking across York just south of 85th Street when she was hit. Gordon was struck by a southbound cab that threw her into the northbound lanes, where she was hit again.
People who live and work in the neighborhood said that stretch of York is dangerous for pedestrians because a hill blocks their view and that of drivers.
Gordon was majoring in marketing and finance at Boston College, one of the best-known Catholic schools in the country.
“This morning, members of our Campus Ministry staff alerted her roommates and close friends about this tragedy,” Barbara Jones, vice president for student affairs, said in an email Friday to the college community. “I ask all of you to keep Kelly and her family in your thoughts and prayers and to support each other during this difficult time."
