ORLANDO, Fla., April 10 (UPI) -- The Orange County Sheriff's Office announced on Twitter Thursday that Robert Corchado had turned himself into police, one day after a Dodge Durango smashed into a day care center in Winter Park, Fla.
Wednesday's hit-and-run crash -- which killed a 4-year-old girl, Lily Quintus, and injured 14 others -- prompted a manhunt for the suspect, a 28-year-old convicted felon.
Florida Highway Patrol Major Cindy Williams told reporters that Corchado must have believed that authorities found eventually find him.
"I think he listened and he did the right thing," she said.
She also said that Corchado was a member of the Latin Kings gang, who might have helped him hide.
"They need to be careful of what they're doing and they need to come forward and help us, because if not, you're an accessory and if we find you're an accessory, we will prosecute you," she said.
Corchado was ticketed for careless driving about a week ago. His criminal history includes multiple arrests and two years in prison for cocaine trafficking.
