LOS ANGELES, April 9 (UPI) -- The man who opened fire at a Los Angeles Police Department facility Monday, injuring an officer, had been rejected by the LAPD police academy.
Daniel C. Yealu is accused of walking into the West Bureau Traffic lobby while a community meeting was underway and opening fire.
He struck one officer, who is expected to survive, seven times. The injured officer's name wasn't released.
The injured officer returned fire on Yealu, who was in critical condition in the hospital Tuesday. Yealu faces charges of attempted murder.
Yealu's father, Danny Yealu, 58, said his son had applied to the police academy last year, but had been rejected.
Upon search of Yealu's vehicle and apartment, police found extra magazines, a "heavily modified" AK-47, a 9-mm handgun, a semiautomatic Sig Saur handgun, an AR-15-style assault rifle, a 1960s SKS model assault rifle and a 12-gauge shotgun.
"By the grace of God, the suspect did not come in with the assault weapons that he has had access to, one of which I believe was in his vehicle parked right out front," said LAPD Chief Charlie Beck.
