Four men face criminal charges in New York for base jumping off One World Trade Center in September. Police Commissioner William Bratton said the four not only put their own lives at risk but acted with disregard for others.
"These men violated the law and placed themselves, as well as others, in danger," Bratton said. "These arrests should send a message to anyone thinking about misusing a landmark this way."
James Brady, Marko Markovich, and Andrew Rossig jumped Sept. 30 from the top of One World Trade Center, Timothy Parlatore, Rossig's lawyer, said. The fourth defendant, Kyle Hartwell, allegedly served as lookout.
All four were charged Monday with burglary, reckless endangerment and jumping from a structure.
Parlatore, who said he has seen video of the 1,300-foot jump, described it as "very professional, very controlled."
"There was nothing haphazard or reckless about it," he said.
Parlatore said his client and the others were shocked at the lack of security at the building. A New Jersey teenager was recently arrested for sneaking into the buildng, also known as Freedom Tower, and climbing to the upper levels.
The four released the video after the charges were announced and say any money they make will go to victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
