Warren Jeffs, the fundamentalist polygamy sect leader serving a life sentence for sexual assault of two teen girls, has been taken to the hospital for an undisclosed illness.
The Texas Department of Criminal Justice said on its offenders search list that Jeffs had been taken to a hospital in Galveston from a prison facility in Palestine, Texas. It was not clear when he was hospitalized, or for what reason.
Jeffs was previously taken to the hospital when, in 2011, he engaged in a lengthy hunger strike that required he be put into a medically-induced coma.
Jeffs, the president of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, is serving a life sentence, plus 20 years, for raping a 15-year-old and 12-year-old girl -- charges of which he was convicted in 2011.
He has also been tried for various counts of accomplice rape -- marrying underage girls to his older male followers -- in Arizona and Utah. Convictions in Utah were overturned by the state Supreme Court over incorrect jury instructions, and charges in Arizona were dismissed with prejudice.
