Los Angeles was shaken awake Monday morning by an earthquake that struck just a few miles from downtown.

The U.S. Geographical Survey first reported the temblor at a 4.7 on the Richter scale, and moments later downgraded it to a 4.4.

The quake, which began just before 6:25 a.m., was primarily felt in Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, and West Los Angeles. It is the largest to hit Southern California so far this year.

A 6.9-magnitude quake hit off the coast of Northern California last week, but caused no significant damage or injuries.
