BATON ROUGE, La., March 17 (UPI) -- Former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards, freed from prison three years ago, announced Monday he will seek the open seat in Louisiana's 6th Congressional District.

Edwards, 86, spent nine years in prison for extortion, fraud and racketeering.

Edwards told reporters at the Baton Rouge Press Club he feels he "can accomplish something, if not immediately, then in the long-run to help make my country a better country and properly address the needs of the 6th district," the (New Orleans) Times-Picayune reported.
