DETROIT, March 13 (UPI) -- Retiring Rep John Dingell, D-Mich., was recuperating in a Detroit hospital Thursday after undergoing a procedure to correct a heart problem, his office said.

His office said Dingell, the longest-serving member in Congress, was "resting comfortably" after undergoing the minimally invasive procedure at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, the Detroit Free Press reported.

"He recently developed atrial fibrillation, and the procedure will seek to find the source of the abnormal heart rhythm and correct it," his congressional offices said in a release issued before he underwent the operation. "He plans to leave the hospital tomorrow [Friday] and will have a light workload during the upcoming district work period. He plans to return to work as Congress reconvenes on [March 24]."

Dingell, 87, of Dearborn announced last month he would retire at the end of his current two-year term after serving 60 years in Congress.

The statement from Dingell's office did not include information on when he was diagnosed or what treatment he was seeking.
